Why Sight Words Matter
Sight words are words that appear so frequently in reading and writing that children should recognize them instantly — without needing to sound them out. Many cannot be decoded phonetically (e.g. said, were, the).
Learning sight words helps young readers:
- Read more fluently with better comprehension
- Build confidence in their reading abilities
- Focus on understanding content rather than decoding every word
- Develop a strong foundation for future reading success
2. Fry Sight Words
The Fry Sight Words list includes the 1000 most common words in English, divided into ten sets of 100 words each, ordered by frequency. Knowing the first 300 Fry words allows children to read approximately 65% of all written material.
